Features to know about

Know Exactly When Your Brakes Are Working: Real Pedal Feedback

When you’re towing, guessing whether your toad’s brakes are really being applied can lead to problems. The Roadmaster Stop Light Switch Kit takes the guesswork out by activating your RV’s brake-monitoring system whenever the actual brake pedal in the towed car moves. That means you’re seeing what’s really happening with the pedal, not just a signal from the air cylinder. You’ll know right away that your supplemental braking system is doing its job, and you’ll avoid damage from a brake that’s accidentally engaged or not retracting fully.

Protects Your Vehicle’s Braking System: Prevents Costly Damage

A misaligned or constantly pressed brake pedal can wear out your tires and braking components fast. This kit ensures your supplemental braking system is working correctly so your pedal can fully release when it should. By making sure the system activates only when it’s supposed to, the Stop Light Switch Kit helps prevent unnecessary strain and the kind of damage that leads to expensive repairs.

Works When Your Ignition Doesn’t Have a Tow Position: Steady 12-Volt Power

If your setup doesn’t include a “tow” position on the ignition, this kit keeps your brake monitoring system powered and reliable. It wires directly into the towed car’s fuse box for a constant 12-volt current, so you always get a steady signal when the brake pedal is pressed. That simple connection keeps your indicator light accurate trip after trip, even on vehicles that cut power when the key is turned off.

Simple, Reliable Setup: Designed for Confidence

The Stop Light Switch Kit is straightforward to install and dependable from day one. It’s built to tie neatly into your system so you get a clean, professional result without complicated wiring. Once in place, it quietly does its job every time you hit the brakes—letting you focus on the drive knowing your brake monitor is giving you the real story.

What You Need to Flat Tow

Flat towing can be a much more convenient way to take your car RVing with you than using a trailer or a tow dolly. It'll save you storage space both at home and at the campsite, and it takes less time and hassle to hook up.

To flat tow your vehicle, there are 5 basic components you're going to need: a tow bar, a base plate kit, a safety cable set, tow bar wiring, and a flat tow braking system.

For the RV Between the RV and Towed Car For the Towed Car
Hitch Tow bar Base plate
Wiring plug Safety cables Braking system
Wiring adapter cord Wiring kit/diodes

The custom-fit base plate installs on the frame of your toad so you can connect the car to your RV with a tow bar. Hook up safety cables between the vehicles to ensure that the toad does not separate from the motorhome if the tow bar becomes detached. Tow bar wiring syncs your vehicle's signal lights with your motorhome's tail lights, as required by law in most states. Finally, the flat tow braking system - also required in most states - activates the brakes in the toad when you hit the brakes in the RV, making for smoother, safer braking, and preventing wear on your motorhome.

I purchased this product for a 2018 Wrangler JL. It is extremely time consuming and near impossible to install a trailer brake controller in this Jeep without it.

by:

This is the second switch I’ve bought. The fuse holder could be designed a little better. Perhaps with the wire out the top rather than the side.

by:

etrailer’s installation video was very helpful. However, the mounting bracket holes on either end seem to be the same size (the video and instructions state that the switch fits into only one end but for me it fit into both). Consequently, it is not clear which side of the bracket to use for the switch vs the vehicle stud. One other installation hint, perhaps unique to the Wrangler Rubicon or Wranglers with upgraded audio/Uconnect, there is an electronic module (3”x4”), mounted to the dash framework behind the lower dash panel, that must be dismounted in order to allow access to the bracket mounting location (see photo).

Installed on a 2023 Equinox LT (AWD). I believe there may have been a change to the Equinox brake pedal assembly from prior years. Because of this, I was not able to get the switch located properly with the bracket that is included in the kit. I fashioned my own mounting plate from a piece of diamondplate which I bolted to the brake lever bracketry. This works great and is rock solid.

by:

The instructions are a little difficult to follow but it was easy to install

by:

Easy installation. I had an issue getting the kit ordered, but the customer service agent was phenomenal in her assistance getting it resolved.

by:

It works as designed. Tricky for this old fat guy to work under the jeep dash but eventually got it installed and adjusted.

by:

Was disappointed that your site said this was the part I needed so I ordered it. Then realized it was not correct part. Called next day to cancel and Oder correct part. I was told I could not cancel it and would have to pay to ship it back. The correct part which was ordered second came 2 days before first part. To get a refund I still had to pay to ship it back. Other than this trailer has been good to work with and quality parts.

by:

Thank you, order arrived as promised, and install was easy and fit my 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland perfect to operate my brake light on my Motorhome dash.

by:

Easy installation. Fit perfectly in my 2014 Grand Cherokee.

by:

Works great fairly easy install. It has been in use for the last 8 month's with no issues. Here may be some helpful hints that I found when installing. Use 10-12" long extension for 13mm nut (left side of opening panel that was removed). Install bracket. Adjust plunger & backing nut by feel. Remove bracket. Install switch with ring washer & nut. Crimp red & green wires on switch wires. Reinstall bracket under dash.

by:

Ill give it 3 stars because I had to shim the bracket to make the plunger line up with the brake arm. But it works well so far.

by:

It is my opinion that the universal brake light switch is the easy way to go. Hardest part doing the DIY way is the place you are working in. I.have a few sore spots trying to get underneath the steering wheel. The benefit is you have instant info that the switch works. A light comes on when you push the break pedal

by:

Roadmaster products are great, very pleased with the superb instructions. Very difficult to mount the pulley for the invisibrake in my Ford Maverick. Trying to drill stainless steel behind the brake pedal was near impossible. Could a bracket for the pulley be mounted on the same studs as the Stop Light Switch?

by:

I have a ‘23 Bronco with the Lux package. The Bronco had a factory brake switch in the spot this thing would go. Advice was unclear whether I could use a factory wire to install my brake controller. I went with the wire that lit the test light when brakes were pressed (key on). I think it was violet with a stripe at the plug for a factory Brake controller. I don’t have the factory tow package. Seems to work but not yet tested with a trailer. Only 3 stars because of the uncertainty. I’ll use this switch on a different project.

by:

Product works great...But was shorted the female connector to terminal 1...Cost over 5 dollars at Auto Zone.As no one sells just one.....Its in the picture...Not in my parts bag...But a perfect fit on the brake switch mount .Three stars only because I had to go buy a connector to complete the job.

by:

One year later and I haven't had to touch this system even once. It just works, all the time, every time. Very happy with this kit. Works perfectly in my 2019 Toad (Jeep Cherokee).

by:

I installed the item in my 2024 Bronco to support braking indication in the motorhome while being towed, since Ford does not include one these days. As far as I can tell, this is the only commercially available kit to avoid cobbling up your own design. It is tedious to install mechanically and, especially tedious to adjust transverse mount position and depth of travel. The button on the switch is too small, requiring very precise alignment to the brake pedal arm (approx 1/4" wide) in the transverse direction from the switch movement. There is no screw type adjustment in that direction so bracket bending/and or bracket mounting spacers is required. I am also afraid the switch button being small and made of some type of poly, it will slip sideways, deform, or wear with even the slightest offset and begin to push the bracket aside. However, it has worked in a few thousand miles of towing behind a motorhome so far. I will keep an eye on this and test function whenever hooking up to tow (a normal practice anyway). I kept thinking it would be easier to use a long lever low force microswitch instead of a tiny soft-tipped, rather hard spring or drag, pushbutton, which would require its own mounting design. Maybe a small highly adjustable ball clamp mount work with a microswitch as well. But I must resist my engineering background tendencies in exchange for getting the job done! Sorry for the quality of the photos. It is in a difficult place for phone camera.

by:

Thanks everyone at etrailer for your help and quick response and shipping! My project turned out really great as you can see in the pictures I have included. The plug for the removable holders I 3D printed. Thanks Fred

This product is very easy to install and it worked the very first time. I use it to supply a ground signal to an LED indicator mounted on my motorhome dash. I can now know for sure that my supplimental braking system is doing its job.

  • How To Power An Auxiliary Braking System In A 2026 Buick Encore GX When The Battery Is Disconnected
Hi Kirk! To get a braking system working on your 2026 Buick Encore GX, you will need to start with something like the Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles - 7-Way to 6-Way Coiled Adapter Cord # RM-15267, if you do not already have that. From there, you will need the following parts (they are all Roadmaster as I think they make the best wiring components for flat towing): Roadmaster Battery Disconnect for Towed Vehicle w/ Flat Tow Brake System # RM-766 Roadmaster...

  • Flat Towing Setup Recommendation For A 2022 Buick Encore GX
For your 2022 Buick Encore GX, you're going to need a high low adapter, a base plate, a tow bar, wiring a braking system, and safety cables. Let's start with a base plate, I recommend the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # RM32FR. This base plate creates a clean design when not in use and allow for quick connection and disconnection. Next, you'll need a tow bar. For this, I recommend the Roadmaster Falcon 2 # RM-520. • Why Does The Roadmaster Battery Disconnect USe The Positive Terminal Post Cable
Roadmaster released a tech bulletin about why the positive needs to be removed instead of following the vehicle's owner's manual and disconnecting the negative post cable. The reason is because if you use the disconnect on the negative side you'll lose your towed vehicle's main ground to the chassis. This means that all of the accessories that need to operate on the toad must be grounded through the connection to the motorhome which is too small of a gauge and the distance is too great...

  • Does Battery of 2022 Buick Encore GX Need to Be Disconnected in Order To Flat Tow It
If your 2022 Buick Encore GX is a FWD vehicle, it cannot be flat towed and you would need to use a tow dolly like part # RM-2050-1. If your Encore is an AWD model that's not a Sport Touring model, it can be flat towed as long as you don't exceed 70 mph. Per the owner's manual, the negative battery terminal does indeed need to be disconnected in order to tow the vehicle. This prevents the battery from being drained. To power the actual brake box in the TrailBlazer, you will need to add one of these 12 volt outlets, # RM-9332, directly...

  • Why Is A Stop Light Switch Kit Needed For A 2020 Buick Encore GX
The Roadmaster Stop Light Switch Kit # RM62FR is needed because the brake light switch wire of the 2020 Buick Encore GX isn't useable and this simulates the braking signal so that it can be sent out to the braking system. This allows you to see when the brakes are being applied while flat towing, which is important because you can easily verify if the brakes are activating when they shouldn't be or not activating when they need to so that you can pull over and troubleshoot the issue.
